A closer look at getting care
A clinic visit gives you space to discuss your goal with a health professional in the same room. Ask whether a hands-on exam would help answer your question.
Telehealth can mean talking by video or phone, or exchanging information online. “Clinician” means the health professional checking your needs. Ask how they will learn about your health, ask more questions, and answer yours.
The US Department of Health and Human Services provides guidance about care. Its guidance, checked in September 2026, says the health professional must hold a licence or have other permission to practise in your state. For an online or phone visit, “your state” means the state where you are located during that visit.
Online prescribing rules vary between states, as of September 2026.
State medical boards are public bodies that oversee doctors’ licences.
The national group for state medical boards is the Federation of State Medical Boards. When online care needs tests or an in-person exam, its guidance says the doctor must arrange them. The doctor can also send you to someone able to do those tests or the exam.
A fixed online form by itself is not enough for care, according to Federation of State Medical Boards guidance reviewed in September 2026. This means a form whose questions and choice of answers never change. It also rejects forms that miss information needed for your care.
That does not rule out all forms. Ask whether a clinician reviews the answers, can ask follow-up questions, and is available for your own questions.
As of September 2026, this medical-board guidance is advice, not a law. Rules for online care are set separately by each state.
The care check
State medical boards make licence status public, along with any public action taken against a doctor for breaking the board’s rules.
A doctor’s record showing no public action does not serve as a rating of their care.
The “Find a state medical board” link opens a list of boards, not a list of doctors. Choose the board for your state to look for a doctor’s record. For nurses and other health professionals, ask which board holds their licence records.
The cost chapter · The short version
Compare what you would pay for the same care and the same period of time.
A dated example: weight and diabetes medicines
As of September 2026, drug companies offered prices for weight-loss and diabetes medicines paid for without insurance. Those prices were mostly $149 to $499 a month. The product and the amount prescribed determined that price.
For some refill discounts, offers checked in September 2026 required ordering again within 45 days after the last delivery. A later order could cost more. The meaning of a “month” varied by product: a 28-day supply, pens sold by the box, or 30 tablets in a bottle.
Ask for a current quote for the exact product being discussed.
Ask how much medicine that price includes and whether there is a deadline for a refill discount.
In a sample of online services for weight loss checked in September 2026, most charged a monthly fee for the care service and a separate charge for medicine.
The monthly fee may be called a membership. Ask which visits or help it pays for, what costs extra, what the price becomes after a discount ends, and how to cancel.
As of September 2026, Medicare Part D covers some prescription medicine costs but continues to exclude medicines used only for weight loss.
For another accepted medical purpose, such as diabetes treatment, Part D can cover a medicine as of September 2026. Coverage still depends on which medicines the plan lists and what its approval rules require.
As of September 2026, the Medicare Bridge is a temporary program for people who meet its rules. Through December 2027, it offers certain weight-loss medicines for a $50 copay each month.
Under the September 2026 rules, who can use the Bridge depends on age, weight and health conditions.
GLP-1 medicines are a type used for diabetes or weight loss. Under the September 2026 rules, you cannot use the Bridge during 2026 if Part D has already paid in 2026 for your GLP-1 medicine.
The Bridge’s September 2026 rules exclude people with type 2 diabetes; coverage for their medicines is considered under ordinary Part D.
For covered medicines, Part D limits the amount you pay each year. Under the September 2026 terms, the monthly $50 you pay to the Bridge is not added to that yearly total. The Bridge still charges $50 each month even after you reach Part D’s limit.
The Bridge provides no extra help with that payment for people on low incomes, under its September 2026 terms.
Ask the plan and prescriber to check the current rules for the exact medicine and use.

A pause is part of the process
An unanswered question is a reason to slow down.

FDA guidance reviewed in September 2026 says claims that a compounded medicine is FDA-approved or works the same as an approved product are misleading.
The FDA’s advice, checked in September 2026, warns about services without a doctor available for your questions once the medicine has arrived.
MedlinePlus calls a severe allergic reaction an emergency, in guidance checked in September 2026.
A swollen tongue or face, or trouble breathing, can signal this reaction; severe symptoms need emergency help.
